The step up from care assistant
Three things change. You administer medication rather than prompt it, which means competency sign-off and a great deal of care with the MAR chart. You write and review care plans. And you supervise, which includes the uncomfortable part of telling a colleague their practice was not good enough.
Services differ on whether seniors are counted in the care numbers. Ask at interview, because a senior shift that is also a full care assistant shift is a very different job from one with protected time for the paperwork.
Qualifications and progression
Most employers want a Level 3 Diploma in Adult Care, or will fund one while you work. Medication administration training is separate and usually in-house, with an observed competency check before you hold keys to the trolley.
From here the route runs to deputy manager and then to registered manager, which is a CQC-registered role with legal responsibility for the service. Seniors who want that path should start asking to be involved in audits early.
