HGV class 2 driver jobs in Hampshire

Rigid lorry work turns up in two industries at once. Hampshire holds 3,500 employee jobs in freight transport by road and 7,000 in warehousing and storage.

The balance between those two counts says more about class 2 work in Hampshire than either number on its own. Warehousing outweighs road freight here, which usually means more distribution running out of large sites.

UK Business Counts recorded 685 freight transport by road workplaces in Hampshire at the March 2025 reference date, 70 of them employing ten people or more. 615 of them, 89.8%, employ under ten. Small yards take newly passed drivers; the larger ones set the shift patterns.

Of the freight transport by road employee jobs the 2024 survey splits by hours in Hampshire, 700 are part time, 18.9% of the split. The middle across the South East is 23.1%, so Hampshire sits below it, 15th of 19 areas on this measure. A part-time share around this level usually means relief and weekend rounds counted alongside the permanent drivers.

Two further counts round out the Hampshire picture: 1,925 employee jobs in postal and courier activities, and 0.31% postal and courier activities, share of all employee jobs.

Measured on employee jobs in warehousing and storage, Hampshire ranks 3rd of the 19 areas in the South East. The middle across the South East is 1,000, against 7,000 in Hampshire. Across the 153 areas in England the middle is 1,250. Next to Hampshire in that order sit Milton Keynes at 10,000 and Oxfordshire at 5,000.

On the separate business register count of freight transport by road workplaces employing 10 or more, Hampshire ranks 2nd of the 19 areas in the South East. The middle across the South East is 10, against 70 in Hampshire. Across the 153 areas in England the middle is 15. Next to Hampshire in that order sit Kent at 115 and West Sussex at 40.
